Mealworm Journal

Today we got our mealworms! I was one of the few that helped take the mealworms out and put them in the petri dishes. The load of mealworms smelled to high heaven! While putting the mealworms into the petri dishes I was able to note some behavior of the mealworms. I discovered that the are very quick, and smarter than I thought. In the cardboard box they swarmed towards the corners and few escaped from us. They were able to climb up the sides of the boxes, how, I don't know.
My mealworms are very eccentric. First of all they are a lot more active than the other mealworms. All of them seem to be alive, and when I talk they start moving around quickly in the petri dish. A couple are more active than others, for example, Vulcan is very active, with a large abdomen, and walks around the dish continuously. He only stops to eat, and only sometimes to sleep, he's strange!

My mealworms are very weird! When I hit a low note on the piano the mealworms writhe around quickly, although some don't. Sometimes after I hit a high note they stop moving for a long time, until I put direct light on them from a flashlight. Some seem to be dead. I put the flashlight underneath the dish, and some seem to have a silhouettes of a black frothy-type liquid. Although they appear to be dead, the two, Aristophenes and Helen, respond when I hit the low note on the piano. I suspect they are trying to shed.

I have done a couple tests on my mealworms. My average mealworms size is about 1", and I used Socrates. I was curious and measured my largest and smallest. The smallest, Helen, was about 0.75 of an inch, and the largest, Vulcan, was 1.25". To find their length, I used my Mealworm Trough. It's a piece of folded paper with marks showing inches and centimeters on the fold.
I did a test on Lassie to test how he walks. I discovered that mealworms use a pair of legs at a time to walk on a smooth piece of paper. I want to further test and see how he walks on rougher surfaces, and at different angles.

I gave the mealworms a school cafeteria carrot today. I am afraid they may die from the strange school food, but they like it. They are swarming onto the carrot. Caeser, Vulcan, and Socrates are hogging an entire side, and climbing ontop of it. All are trying to eat it, except Helen, Aristotle, and Aristophenes. Helen and Aristotle respond to light, heat, touch and sound, twitching their legs when they come in contact with it. Aristophenes does not respond to anything, and I fear he is dead.

Date: March 7, 1998

Time: 8:00 AM

I haven't had much time with my mealworms today, but from what I see they are pretty active right now. A pile of them are squirming around on the side, and Vulcan, Caeser, Sophicles, and Lassie are still munching on the carrot. Helen and Aristotle are in their acoma, and same with Aristophenes. Aristophenes still doesn't respond to anything and he is gradually gaining a darker color. When I put the flashlight under him, I see lots of the black silhouette. If he is still in this condition later today, I'll have to let go..... sob ......

Date: March 7, 1998

Time: 5:50

Aristophenes is dead. I gave him a funeral at sea. He is now in a better place, the Northern Virginia plumbing system. He was curled up on his side, dark brown, and non responsive to light, sound or heat. His legs were also crumple up, and looked as if they were going to fall off. No others are dead, yet Helen and Aristotle are still in "acoma." They respond to light, heat and sound, yet do not move their entire bodies. Their state reminds me of the pupa, but neither are big enough to be pupating. They still are the yellowish color. I fear they will be in this state for a long time.
Most mealworms have stopped trying to eat the carrot, except Vulcan and Caeser. They are still chomping away, and I suspect that they may be getting ready to begin pupation. I am going to change the bran soon.

Date: March 8, 1998

Time: 11:30

Today I put in an apple into the dish. My mealworms are ecstatic, and are swarming onto it. Caesar is hogging most of it, but Brutus is climbing up onto the top of it. He seems to be very excited about all this.

Date: March 8, 1998

Time: 5:00

The mealworms are still eating the apple, and it is being covered with chips of bran, or feces. Caeser, Vulcan, Lassie, and George (a smaller one) are hogging most of the apple. When I turn the lamp on the mealworms struggle to get into the shadow of the apple.

Date: March 9, 1998

Time: 11:30

I forgot my mealworms today. I left them at home. However, when I took the apple out of the dish, I noticed that several large mealworms made an intricate tunnel system on the bottom, going through the side, and straight up. I really need to clean out my dish, there's almost no bran left, but a lot of waste. Also I noticed that Augustus is parylyzed, or dead, and if he's dead this afternoon, I'll bury him.

Date: March 9, 1998

Time: 5:00

Nothing has happened. I noticed that Augustus still moves his legs, so he isn't dead. The carrot I put in hasn't been touched,  I think because it is to dry for the mealworms. Also, Lassie has been lying on his side, and I can see his skin is just about to flake off.

Date: March 10, 1998

Time: 11:30

Augustus is now gone. I realized he was dead when I found his flat, brown, crippled, sticky, mushy and pitiful body underneath the carrot. It does not seem to be a natural cause of death. I suspect Brutus, and I must make sure Caesar survives.
Today in science I cleaned out their dish, and replaced the old bran with fresher, newer bran. I put so much in that the mealworms can bury themselves in it. I made sure they can breathe, and they are very active down there. Ever since Lassie shed he has been a whitish color with only a little dark brown the very end of his abdomen.

Date: March 10, 1998

Time: 5:30

My mealworms are still underneath the bran. The have eaten a lot of it, one fourth of the dish is completely empty, besides mealworms. They act quite wildly when I pick them up. One mealworm had an improvement in speed. Brutus at first went only 2 centimeters in a minute, while after I put him in the bran, he improved his speed by more than 10 centimeters. The worms still respond to light, sound, heat, and touch, even under the bran. When I do put the flashlight underneath the bran, the squiggle up to the surface as fast as they can go. They seem more comfortable under the bran, maybe because they are not subjected to lots of light.

Date: March 11, 1998

Time: 11:30 AM

I think a mealworm I inherited from one of my mealworm hating friend is dead. He's crusty, black, and burrowed. When I took him out I realized the other mealworms bit off his head. I suspect Brutus, once more. I am going to put Brutus in a separate container for the safety of my other mealworms. Nothing else has really happened.

Date: March 11, 1998

Time: 5:30 PM

My mealworms have been acting strange lately. When I pick them up they get on their front legs and rear. They curl up sometimes, and spring back up, jumping almost. They are amazing. They act almost haughty. Caesar is getting huge, but he's still friendly.

Date: March 12, 1998

Time: 11:30

Caesar is still bloating. He is abnormally friendly, but he seems to be separate from the other mealworms. Brutus is gettng the majority of the attention from the mealworms. I almost feel sorry for Caesar. Another unexplained death seems to be hanging in the air. I have suddenly have a loss of two or three mealworms. Oh well, probably just me.

Time: 11:30

My mealworms are freaky today!!! I think they're playing a practical joke. They're acting dead! All but Caesar are lying on their sides, snoozing. Caesar is, like normal eating. He's still getting bigger, and getting a little jumpier.

Date: March 13, 1998

Time: 5:30

They've gone back to normal. They're still boring, but at least they're moving. The walk around the dish like any other day, but they don't sleep as much. I think they were up all night partying! They are eating a lot, and Caesar is slimming down, again.

Date: March 14, 1998

Time: 11:30

Report:  My mealworms, I nearly forgot, they're eating sleeping, the normal. They're really boring, and they try to escape every now and then.

Date: March 14, 1998

Time: 5:30

My mealworms are joking with me again, except two are dead. They're all lying on their side, while two are headless, brown and crusty. I only have one thing to say: E tu Brute?!?

Date: March 15, 1998

Time: 10:30

I really haven't paid much attention to my mealworms this entire weekend. Just by glancing in I notice that two are not moving, which is rare, and that there is a new shedding. I hae to go out to breakfast now, but I'll be back soon to construct my mealworm mazes.

Date: March 15, 1998

Time: 5:30

I have constructed two mazes for my mealworms. One is about 4.5" x 6", and the other is 6" x 6". In both of them I have everything they might encounter in life, ledges, bumps, bridges, rooms with colored light, dead ends, and even fake flowers. I constructed them out of legoes, because the other 3 methods I tried would take to long, or not work at all. Because I could not use any of my original methods, my mazes don't look at all like my plan.

Time: 11:30

Pupa, Pupa!!!!!!!!! Caesar is a pupa! I found out this mornin' and I'm thrilled! He's jumpy, too, and finally, he's safe from Brutus. Brutus is acting dead, I think he's trying to induce pupation, and it might work, unfortunately. He's getting bigger, and bigger. I am afraid, maybe he has supernatural powers.....

Date: March 16, 1998

Time: 5:30

Brutus isn't pupating, it's actually Vulcan, he's a nice mealworm. I've seperated Brutus, now he's gone, but, he's inching his way back. Caesar is really jumpy, if the dish moves, he jumps, and flops and does the hoky-poky.

Date: March 17, 1998

Time: 11:30

Brutus is on top of Caesar in a final attempt to kill him, but it isn't working. The other mealworms are huddled in a section of the dish hiding from the rampages of Brutus. When I separate the mealworms they all scuddle back into a heap, and fight off Brutus if he comes near.

Date: March 17, 1998

Time: 5:30

My mealworms are rotating in a circle when I talk to them. Some just raise their head in the bran and then continue eating. Two of my mealworms are asleep, ontop of each other in the shape of a cross. It's so cute, well as cute as a mealworm can get.

Date: March 18, 1998

Time: 11:30

Two more pupae! They are randomly scattered around the dish and Brutus has begun to stop attempting to kill them. The pupae are, like Caesar, really, really jumpy. Whenever the dish is bumped, I talk, or a mealworm brushes by, the flop onto the other side. Caesar is beginning to get a lot darker, and I can see his eyes clearly.

Date: March 18, 1998

Time: 5:30

The two new pupae are doing fine, but Brutus is going crazy. By far, he is the most sentient, but least understood mealworm. I wish I could now what he is thinking, if any at all. He has violent modd swings, and is easily misunderstood by the other mealworms. I think this is why he wishes so much to kill his many, many foes. Sob... This is so moving, just like a bad soap opera script.

Date: March 19, 1998

Time: 11:30

Two new acquisitions!!! Marathon and Shorty were recently admitted to the federal Union of Mealworms of Hredotosh. One is small and meek, slightly sentient, and the other is a wrigley, stupid, brawny mealworm. Brutus hates Mararthon, but I think he like Shorty, who I suspect, is a female. They both have that "not understandable" look that makes you want to love them. She too doesn't like Marathon. I think that in the past Brutus was Helen's boyfriend, and that when Brutus's first love died of disease, maybe even foulplay, he was a broke mealworm, but now, he's making a comeback, and what a comeback it is.........

Date: March 19, 1998

Time: 5:30

Shorty and Brutus got their job done. Today I was experiment of the effect of the smell of a hamster to mealworm, when Shorty and Brutus did it. They persuaded Marathon to go up to the hamster, infact, they pushed him, and Dot did it. At least I don't have to hold a funeral...

Date: March 20, 1998

Time: 11:30

Shorty is growing like a mad insect. She shed two times last night, and Brutus once. They love each other passionately. Oh, by the way, Brutus and his female companion ate the abdomen off of a pupa, an extra pupa. Oh well, live and let die.

My mealworms are doing the norm, eating sleeping. Sleeping? Sounds good, goodnight.

Date: March 21, 1998

Time: 5:30

Brutus is a mature pupa, already, and he's as happy as a hamster. He's been flopping, I think to impress Shorty. St. Stu is a goner. He's dark, dark brown, and when I tried to revive him by flicking his tail up and down, which often works, his head snapped off. Hey, what could I have done???

Date: March 22, 1998

Time: 11:30

Beetle numero uno!!!!! Caesar is a beetle!!! He is a freak of nature, but that's okay! His wing got caught on the shedding, and it's stuck there for good, so what? Vulcan is rip roarin ready to get out of there, and a new acquisition, Lola, is dead, like a boiled cabbage. Lola's body was in the same state as Augustus's, so I think Shorty did it to keep her  mealworm!

Date: March 22, 1998

Time: 5:30

Don't tell Brutus, but Shorty is dead. Her crippled body was ripped apart by the mealworms, so I think it was natural. What a sad thing to happen. Beetle numero dos!!! Vulcan emerged early this morning, and the "twin" pupas are ready to go also. What an exciting day!!!

Date: March 23, 1998

Time: 11:30

The twins are beetles, HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are very excited, and thrilled, but, they're also dead. Plusses, and minuses, ya know, give some, take some. However, two pupae are also ready to go. At last count I have 4 pupae, I originally, for a while, had 8!

Date: March 23, 1998

Time: 5:30

My mealworms are boring, Caesar and Vulcan are off partying on one side of the dish, it's just plain fun. I noticed that the mealworms have divivded the dish into 3 vertical sections. The largest one is in the center and it contains the mealworms, the two smaller ones contain the pupae and beetles, my mealworms are actually organized!!!

Date: March 25, 1998

Time: 11:30

Report:  Beetle Numero, I don't care, just a beetle. Caesar and Vulcan, who is a woman, killed two pupae and sucked the juices out of them. Last night I caught them in "the act." Caesar was on top, I won't get into details, just I am expecting a shipment of eggs to come in soon, if you get my drift, eh, eh. I didn't even give ‘em FLE classes! I'm impressed.

Date: March 23, 1998

Time: 5:30

: There's another victim of Caesar, and it's gruesome. The same type of death. Brutus just eerged from the pupa, and he's gonna show Caeser his stuff. I am just going to sit back, and enjoy the show.

Date: March 24, 1998

Time: 11:30

I don't know what happened. I just found Caesar dead this morning. Well, the cause of death is evident, the beetle didn't have an abdomen for Pete's sake, but I'm glad. I originally supported Caesar, but I realize now that he was as cruel as the D river is short. As cold hearted as the elephant is huge. As dumb as... I don't have to tell you, you know. Now Brutus is in power... Hail Brute!!!

Date: March 24, 1998

Time: 5:30

Brutus is gentle, and pale. He loves other mealworms, but he still is on a killing rampage against those that hurt him. He has killed two pupae and a mealworm that conspired for the death of both Helen and Shorty. I now know the truth, although it hurts. I will not continue with the journal now. I have counted and it has been four weeks, if not more, so please, don't give me a "C," for these journal entries describe a time of feudalism, love, murder, and scandal, which is as dramatic as a really, really bad novel. Thank you. This is Steven Young, signing out.
